step 3
finding local crime data

NYPD's Patrol Services Bureau gives details and data about specific precincts, and are categorized by region.

The InfoShare website provides access to an abundance of data -including crime statistics at many geographic levels (including Police Precinct, NYC Neighborhood, Community District, Census Tract and political boundaries). This site is highly recommended and easy to use, but you do have to register. While you can sign up for a week free, the site requires a fee after that period.

Other than through Infoshare, finding local crime data is more of a challenge than it should be. Despite the NYPD's recent emphasis on timely and accurate data, they do not make crime statistics available on their website.

There are two ways to go about getting crime information from the NYPD.

  • Department of Public Information NYPD
    (212) 374-6700

This department is responsible for issuing NYPD info to the press. If your organization has, or is affiliated with a publication of any kind you can send a letter on official letterhead requesting the information you need and they are usually fairly responsive.
  • Municipal Library
31 Chambers Street (behind City Hall), suite 112.
    Open: 10-4 Phone: (212) 788-8590

If you are not affiliated with any sort of publication you can obtain the NYPD's bi-yearly report on crime statistics at the Municipal Library. The report, titled
Statistical Report: Complaints and Arrests, comes out every six months (in June and December) and is produced by the Office of Management, Analysis and Planning: Crime Analysis Unit.

The Statistical Report is broken down by precinct, so in order to find the crime data for your community, you will need to identify the police precincts in your area.
