2008 Summer/Fall Share
WHAT IS A CSA FOOD CO-OP?
A Community Sponsored Agriculture food co-op connects New York City families with local Organic Farmers. When you become a member of the Norwood Food Co-op CSA you will receive a share of the weekly harvest of the Norwich Meadows Farm. Through this CSA, sponsored by Just Food, we are re-creating the direct link between the farmer and consumer, giving consumers fresh and more wholesome organic foods.
A CSA is not like shopping at the supermarket. Your weekly share will be comprised of fresh organic vegetables and fruits grown in season and picked just prior to delivery. The quantity and variety of items in the share will vary from week to week, depending on weather and season. You will learn to enjoy a wider variety of seasonal vegetables. The quantity of food varies based on the harvest (there is risk involved), but we usually receive between 5 and 8 different items per week. In an average year, the share prices reflect a savings of about 15-20% off what you would pay in a green market for a comparable amount of organic produce. In a good year, the savings can be much more. The season lasts from mid-June to early November (about 21 weeks), and 2008 will be our fifth season!
BECOMING A MEMBER
To become a member, you must purchase a share. There are two size shares:
- Single Share: $285.00 (about $13/week)
- Double Share: $570.00 (about $26/week)
Most of our member families (with 2 to 4 people) get a Single Share, but if you eat lots of vegetables, juice, or have a larger family, a Double Share may be the way to go. Share size varies based on how good a year it is.
Payments:
Registration for 2008 is now closed. If you are interested in seeing what it's all about, stop by the distribution site on Thursdays evenings now through mid-November.
We are working to accept EBT/Food Stamps:
Details will be available soon! Check our website or call 718-514-3305 to get more information.
Shares in past years have included:
Tomatoes (Heirloom, Zebra, Cherry), Potatoes (Fingerling, Blue), Lettuces (Leaf, Romaine, Boston, mixes), Basil, Squashes (many of summer and winter variety), Eggplants (Italian and Asian), Peppers (Sweet, colored, hot), Beans (Fava, French Filet), Cucumbers (Oriental, Middle Eastern, Kirby), Melons (Honey Dew, Oriental, Watermelons), Root Crops (Radishes, Turnips, Onions, Carrots, Garlic, Leeks, Shallots), Greens (Over 20 varieties), Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts.
SPECIAL ITEM SHARES
Once you sign up to become a member, you may also purchase Special Item Shares. We will again offer a FRUIT SHARE, which will come primarily from Red Jacket Orchard. Their fruit is produced with fewer pesticides through Integrated Pest Management (IPM). There will be a full fruit share that comes 20 times, and a half share that comes 11 times. We will also offer an EGG SHARE, HONEY SHARE, GRANOLA SHARE, YOGURT SHARE, BUTTER SHARE, MILK SHARE, and CHEESE SHARE. Each of these items will be delivered every other week during the season (11 deliveries). See reverse for more details.
PICKING UP YOUR SHARE:
Every Thursday from mid June through early November, the farm will deliver our food to the distribution site at Epiphany Lutheran Church (302 E 206th Street, just off of Bainbridge). Pickup time is between 4:00 & 7:00 PM.
VOLUNTEERING:
All members MUST volunteer 4 hours over the course of the season at the distribution site or in another manner such as outreach, composting or gardening at the church, contributing articles to the newsletter, delivering leftovers to a soup kitchen, organizing group activities, or serving on the core group. Sign up at the site during the first few weeks of delivery. Our volunteer coordinators will remind you of your obligations.

WHAT
TO EXPECT:
- This season, Zaid plans to have winter deliveries every three weeks instead of every four weeks. This means there will be a total of six deliveries from December 15th to April 30th.There will be two options for the winter share: Vegetarian (lacto-ovo)
and Non-Vegetarian. Non-vegetarians will have a choice of chicken
or ground beef with the farm determining what the choice of the
week will be. Vegetables that will be available include most storage crops:
a variety of potatoes, winter squashes (acorn, butternut), cabbage,
frozen tomatoes and possibly some greens (chard and kale). There will also be various dairy products
from the Evans Farm including cheese and yogurt, plus organic
eggs from Norwich Meadows Farm. Potential dry goods could include granola, organic beans and possibly
dried fruits, as well as local honey and maple syrup (Evans Farm).Preserved goods from the farm may include pickles, jams, and tomato sauces, as season and crops allow. Vegetarian shares will either receive more of certain items or
extra items to make up for not receiving meat.
- As you can see, there will be a wide selection of products. Good
nutrition and eating healthy food are year-round concerns and
should not be put on hold during the winter months.
