Neighborhoods are not officially recognized by the census, you will need to define your neighborhood by finding the associated census tracts (definition). The best way to find the census tracts that comprise your area, is to look at a census tract map. You can either try to view these maps on-line, or purchase them on paper.
Recently, a number of new ways of accessing data have been developed. Infoshare was created to provide users access to an abundance of NYC data by many geographical definitions, including neighborhood. This site is highly recommended and easy to use, but you do have to register. While you can sign up for a week free, the site requires a fee after the introductory period. You can also create free neighborhood maps using the NYC Oasis website. It allows to create maps of population density, youth population and income by census tract, and even view aerial photographs of your neighborhood. The site is a great tool if you already have data and are looking for a free mapping tool to support you numbers. |
