census tracts

There are three main ways to get census tract maps on line:

  • HUD's newly created interactive online map library lets you choose from a variety of types of maps, including census tract maps. Highly recommended for finding mapped data on your community, although actual statistical numbers are curiously absent from their maps, and their site is at times overwhelmed by too many visitors.
  • The american fact finder maps from the Census Bureau. If you want some help using the aff site, use our map guide.
  • land view III: Free mapping software from the EPA. The program is very expensive but you can download a sample version for free.

community districts

The best map of the city's community districts can be found through the department of city planning. They have available a zoomable map of the city in PDF format, with streets, neighborhoods and community board districts.

nypirg's "who represents me?": an interactive map of the city that tells the user her representatives at the state, local and federal level.

The City Project and the Community Studies of New York, Inc., recently created a report entitled "City of Contrasts 2000: 51 New York City Council Districts" which provides demographic, health, education and housing statistics by City Council district. The report also includes a number of maps showing immigration, asthma and infant mortality rates throughout the City. The report is not currently online, but we are hoping it will be soon. In the mean time, you can order the report for $20.00 from City Project. Click here to open the printable order form for the report.

other mapping tools

  • HUD's newly created interactive online map library lets you choose from a variety of types of maps, including housing data and program maps, census tract and data maps, and a number of other useful and user-friendly maps. Highly recommended for finding mapped data on your community, although actual statistical numbers are curiously absent from many of their maps. One other temporary problem is that since the site is new, it is at times overwhelmed by too many visitors at once.
  • The EPA's enviromapper lets users enter a geographical area and locate hazardous waste, toxic release, and other environmental hazards present.
